PharmaMar is being consolidated despite this blow and is really innovative in its development of drugs derived from marine organisms. One is dealing with new compounds having also a novel anti-tumour mechanism of action, which may pave the way to new modes of action against tumoural cells. The near future will tell if PharmaMar can succeed in what is generally considered a risky venture. New Zealand has an extensive coastline, and a diverse and unique algal flora, including 800 known species of seaweeds. This represents an ample source for exploration. Industrial Research Limited IRL ; , a New Zealand Government Crown Research Institute, and New Zealand Pharmaceuticals NZP ; have formed a strategic alliance with the Hobart-based company, Marinova Pty Limited, with a view to commercializing marine organisms-derived compounds for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. The IRL was set up in 1992, following the restructuration of the Directorate of Scientific and Industrial Research DSIR ; . This restructuration resulted in the formation of several Crown Research Institutes. The IRL is owned by the New Zealand Government and overseen by a board of directors, which includes representatives from several high-profile New Zealand based-companies. The IRL undertakes contract research-and-development projects in technology areas, including advanced materials, biochemical engineering, complex measurements and analysis, alongside commercialization activities. It also has the capability of specialty manufacturing within IRL Biopharm and IRL Glycosyn. The carbohydrate chemistry team at IRL is recognized as a world leader in the development of high-value carbohydrate compounds Boyd, 2003 ; . With new facilities, backed by 20 years in seaweed research, the development of novel compounds has now become commercially viable, through a strategic alliance between New Zealand and Tasmania a trans-Tasman link. Thus, New Zealand Pharmaceuticals NZP ; now manufactures Marinova's bioactive compounds and is a shareholder in Marinova. This close relationship brings significant expertise in process development under good manufacturing practice GMP ; standards. The focus of Marinova, IRL and NZP's seaweed programme is on high-value products. Initial commercialized products are for the dietary supplements market with prospects to launch botanical drugs in the short to medium-term under a new US Federal Drug Administration FDA ; category Boyd, 2003.

Restrict inclusion criteria by study type. Studies were only included if they provided sufficient information on diagnosis and individual outcomes. The outcomes of interest were not defined a priori and appear to be governed by the content of the studies identified. The outcomes covered in the review were the percentage of participants with remission or marked improvement of symptoms immediately after ECT and at 6 months' followup, adverse events including mortality, prolonged seizures, subjective side-effects and cognitive functioning. The reviewers did not provide any information regarding the medical and psychological databases searched or give details of the manual searches, so it is difficult to ascertain the comprehensiveness of the review. Language bias was reduced as the reviewers translated papers from other languages into English and included them in the review. The reviewers identified 60 reports describing 396 cases in their initial review and a further 11 reports by 1999. Information on diagnosis and short-term outcome was available for 224 cases in 1999 and 154 out of 396 39% ; of cases in 1997. The present authors' searches did not identify any studies published before 1999 that were not included in the review. No information was provided regarding how data were abstracted. Two independent reviewers rated the quality of the studies and only included those that provided sufficient information on diagnosis and outcome. However, other elements of study quality were not taken into account when the results of the papers were summarised. The reviewers provided details of how they summarised outcomes. Reviewers defined responders as those who showed marked improvement or recovery both immediately after ECT and 6 months postECT as defined by the study authors. However, this assessment was not reported as being blind to either the study authors or the results of treatment and was open to some degree of subjective interpretation. The data on efficacy were summarised by adding case series and reports together to produce an overall percentage of these with a good outcome after ECT and at 6 months by diagnosis. However, it was not clear whether this was undertaken on an ITT basis. A qualitative overview of data on adverse effects was undertaken. Overall, the quality of the studies included in the review was poor and there were no controlled studies. Reviewers' quality ratings ranged from, for example, overactive bladder.

In the eye, which develops as a result of aging, trauma, diabetes or heredity. The number one cause of blindness worldwide, cataract affects over 18 million people 50 percent of all blind adults ; . HKI helps address the problem by providing equipment and technology, and by training local ophthalmologists as well as nurses and community health workers. HKI is currently working to develop safe surgeries and effective after care for adults in Indonesia, Vietnam and China. Further, thousands of children become blind each year as a result of congenital cataract. In Mexico City, HKI's Project ChildVision enabled surgery for 129 children in 2003, granting these children a second chance for an education and a bright future.
SELECTION OF LEAFLETS FOR THE STUDY Since we wanted to recruit participating patients from the pharmacies where they received their medications, the patient information leaflets to be studied were selected from those accompanying commonly used medicines that were available at all pharmacies in Sweden. We obtained a list of 165 medicines that had been prescribed 100000 times or more during 1999 from the Swedish Drug Statistics System 1 ; . From this list we randomly selected 30 medicines for the study and the patient information leaflets accompanying these medicines were examined. Table 1 lists the selected medicines. THE EXPERT EXAMINATION Two protocols were set up for the expert examination of the selected patient information leaflets. The protocol Appendix 1 ; for the examination of language and layout was based upon the work of Anderson 12 ; , Bjrnsson 1 and re3 ; , lated standardized assessment techniques previously published 14, 15, 16 ; . Nine items regarding layout and language were examined. A patient information leaflet that was satisfactory in relation to these items could score a maximum of 25 points. A high number of points would thus indicate good readability and a favorable layout. The selected patient information and digoxin and tolterodine, for instance, anticholinergic.
Of sulfated GAGs in normal human nasal mucosa and nasal polyp were detected light microscopically with the histochemical method using poly-L-lysine-conjugated colloidal gold followed by silver enhancement. Results. Sulfated GAGs in normal human nasal mucosa were distributed in the epithelial layer, vascular endothelial surface, submucosal gland and extracellular matrix. In nasal polyp, intense staining was also seen in the glandular structure and epithelial layer. However, the vascular endothelium and extracellular matrix exhibited either a weak reaction or no reaction. 2005 Taylor & Francis. 537. Lipopolysaccharide decreases connexin 43 expression on nasal epithelial cells in vitro - Yeh T.-H., Hsu W.-C., Chen Y.-S. et al. [Dr. T.-H. Yeh, Department of Otolaryngology, National Taiwan University Hospital, 7, Chung-Shan South Road, Taipei 100, Taiwan] - ACTA OTO-LARYNGOL. 2005 125 10 ; summ in ENGL Conclusions. Decreased connexin 43 Cx43 ; expression as a result of application of lipopolysaccharide LPS ; may limit the diffusion of intercellular signaling molecules that is essential to the coordinated function of neighboring cells. Therefore, it may be related to a ciliary beating defect in nasal epithelial cells and result in accumulation of harmful substances. Objective. Gap junction intercellular communication GJIC ; is altered during inflammation in tracheal epithelial cells. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether LPS affects the expression of Cx43, the elementary protein composing the gap junction of nasal epithelial cells, in vitro. Material and methods. LPS Pseudomonas aeruginosa serotype 10 ; was applied to epithelial cells obtained from nasal polyp for 24 h in vitro. As an inflammatory indicator, IL-8 secretion was measured using a commercially available ELISA kit. Cx43 protein was detected semiquantitatively using Western blotting. Results. The nasal epithelial cells constitutively secreted IL-8 at a concentration of 0.45 0.03 ng g protein. In the presence of 10-2 mg ml LPS, the concentration of IL-8 was significantly increased to 0.55 0.05 ng g protein n 8 ; . Expression of the Cx43: -actin ratio decreased in a time- and dose-dependent fashion 10-3 -10-1 mg ml LPS ; . 2005 Taylor & Francis. 538. The effect of indoor fungi on the symptoms of patients with allergic rhinitis in Istanbul - Gelincik A.A., B y k zt S., G l u u al. [A.A. Gelincik, Eytam Cad. 31 5 Macka, 80200, Istanbul, Turkey] - INDOOR BUILT ENVIRON. 2005 14 5 ; - summ in ENGL This study investigated the relation between mould exposure and allergic rhinitis in Istanbul through questionnaires and measurements of fungal propagules in indoor air. The study group was 42 patients with perennial allergic rhinitis who were sensitive to mould and 40 age and sex matched healthy subjects as controls. A questionnaire was used to characterise the variables of home environment and occupants' behaviour which might have an impact on the presence of fungal levels. At the same time, symptom scores were assessed according to the answers of the patients while air samples were collected to obtain a comparison between the patients' symptoms and the fungal counts. Samples were collected from the bedrooms and the main living rooms between 15 September and 15 November, 2002. Fungal concentrations were reported as colony forming units per cubic metre of air using the MAS 100 conversion unit table. The questionnaires showed that patients reported significantly higher dampness, mould and mildew in their homes than the controls p 0.004, p 0.02, respectively ; . Also the relative humidity in the patients' houses was significantly higher compared to the controls p 0.001 ; . The total culturable concentrations of fungi were significantly higher in the patients homes compared to those in the homes of the controls p 0.003, p 0.009, respectively ; . A significant positive correlation was found between the patients' symptom scores and the fungal propagule concentrations r2 0.39-0.49 , p 0.001 ; . Overall the results of this study suggest that damp housing and indoor fungal concentrations show a positive correlation with symptoms of allergic rhinitis. 2005 Sage Publications.

Some ITDD systems are at risk of significant damage and malfunction from MRI scanners. Under some circumstances patients with fully implanted intrathecal drug delivery systems can have MRI scans. Advice should be taken from local scanning departments; all should have access to guidelines on this. Manufacturer guidance should be sought and will vary according to pump type and model, field strength of the magnet, sequences to be used and body part to be imaged, specifically whether near the implant and whether local coils will be used. Programmable systems should be stopped prior to the scan and then recommenced once the MRI scan is completed. Patients with fixed rate delivery systems pose more of a problem; these should have both the reservoir and catheter emptied prior to the scan then be refilled once completed. However if the catheter is emptied then issues relating to potential opioid withdrawal and an increase in pain and spasm will have to be addressed. Scanners in airports and shops should be avoided; patients are able to show a card to accommodate this. Patients with fixed rate delivery systems should be advised to avoid saunas and sunbeds as the increase in heat may cause the implant to increase its rate of delivery. Advice should be taken from the implanting clinician before deep sea diving. Short wave diathermy should be not be used within 30 cm of the pump or catheter and dipyridamole.

History: Symptoms occur when ionized calcium levels drop to less than 2.5-3 mg 100 ml. The symptoms are mainly neurologic, secondary to the hyperexcitability of neuronal membranes that develops in a low-calcium environment. Cardiac effects are limited because cardiac Tetany occurs at levels of hypocalcemia lower than those causing neurologic effects; therefore, the patient usually comes to medical attention prior to the onset of cardiac disturbances. At presentation, electrocardiogram ECG ; changes may be noted, but generally the heart is functioning normally. Neurologic effects in adults o Extremity and periorbital paresthesias o Muscle cramping and spasms o Altered mental status o Psychosis.
Adipose tissue collected by aspiration from the buttocks, found decreased DDE concentrations in cancer cases compared with controls, a difference that was more pronounced after adjustment for BMI, age at first birth, and current alcohol drinking 33 ; . Two large recent studies, conducted in Germany and Canada, found no significant difference between DDE concentrations of breast cancer cases and controls 34, 35 ; . p, p -DDE, o, p-DDT, and p, p -DDT are considered estrogenic and give positive results in the E-Screen assay 36 ; , although o, p-DDT, which was not detectable in our study, appears to be the most highly estrogenic of these compounds 4, 36 ; . Although there have been conflicting results in human studies, our study results and accumulating evidence from several recent studies do not support the hypothesis that breast cancer is associated with environmental exposure to DDT or DDE. Table 7 summarizes data from seven previous studies examining the relationship between PCB levels in serum and breast cancer. PCB concentrations measured among controls in these studies ranged from 2.2 ng ml in samples collected in the United States in 1989 9 ; to 8.7 ng ml in samples collected in Denmark in 1976 Ref. 7; Table 7 the average concentration, for example, overactive bladder.

From Eq. 1 ; , it follows that the dependence of the logarithm of the amount of sorbed substance in the solid state is a linear function of the number of successive volumes employed during extraction. For real systems, this is valid when only one type of sorption exists, or if one type is dominant, so that the others can be disregarded this was the case for extraction with distilled water lasting 1 hour10 ; . In other cases, deviations from a straight line occur, indicating that the sorbent can bind the sorbed substance by different types of sorption, i.e. different sorbent points. Using Eq. 1 ; , two types of curves were obtained with the results given in Tables IIII. A linear dependence was obtained when solutions A and B at pH 2.87 and solution D at pH 3.75 were used. Extrapolation of the curves Fig. 2 ; gave values marked as C0 given in Table IV. They are smaller than the corresponding initial values given in Tables II and III, indicating that one type of sorption is dominant in these cases, but at least one more type of sorption is present. In the remaining cases, curves were obtained, selected examples of which are given in Fig. 3, demonstrating the presence of at least two types of sorption, but the extraction of cesium when using the corresponding extractant was not differentiated enough to make one of them dominant.
